As a bilingual, bicultural Licensed Psychologist (CA PSY 34088), I have developed expertise in ADHD, trauma-informed practice, and Latine/x mental health. My work is rooted in multiculturalism and serving as an agent of social change. I live in Los Angeles, CA, and enjoy dancing, going to the beach, hiking, and volunteering in my community.

I am from Maryland and the daughter of Peruvian immigrants. Growing up, I lived in poverty, watched my father be deported, and observed some of my peers struggle in obtaining higher education because of documentation status while I advanced as a first-generation college student. My personal experiences have inspired my passion for providing culturally competent behavioral health services.

I am a first-generation college graduate who earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. While at the University of Maryland, I was accepted into the McNair Scholars Program, where I developed my research skills and obtained access to resources to pursue my doctoral studies. Then, I embarked on my journey to Nebraska where I earned an M.A. and Ph.D., in Counseling Psychology in the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During my first year as a doctoral student, I founded the Latina/o Graduate Student Association at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As a Latina, I saw the need to provide a community for Latine/x graduate students by offering support and mentorship, as well as academic and professional development. Throughout my doctoral studies, I molded my professional experiences to focus on prevention and education within the Latine/x community. For example, I sought additional training by attending PASEO, a Spanish Immersion Program in Peru. Being in a rural area of Peru my identity as a Peruvian American woman born and raised in the U.S. was salient. I embraced the culture while also being aware of my own knowledge gaps, areas of bias, and how my privilege affects my work.

Testimonials

  • National Latinx Psychological Association

“Dr. Castro's participation as a panelist in the internship session at the annual National Latinx Psychological Association (NLPA) was energizing and exciting. Her honesty and vulnerability were inspiring to all attendees. Her suggestions were helpful around the internship process, and more importantly, her genuineness when addressing the struggles felt real and relatable. I am glad to be able to hear both sides and to have had the opportunity to engage in an honest and open conversation with such an inspiring Latina in the field.”

    - Sandra Bertram Grant Solís, MEd, NLPA Panel Coordinator

  • National Alliance for Hispanic Health

“Dr. Castro presented a very informative mental health webinar in Spanish to women from Chicago, IL; El Paso, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; and San Diego, CA. She was very engaging, empathetic, charismatic, and a good listener with the audience. She offered various examples as she presented the information from the PowerPoint. The audience felt confident and comfortable in asking her questions and Dr. Castro professionally answered as many as she could while respecting the session’s allotted time. I would highly recommend her to speak at any speaking engagements in English and Spanish.”
